purplish colored fish with 2 broad vertical bands and a dark tail... the long barbels on its chin are used to search for food in the sand... it has an abnormally large head with a blunt snout and fat lips thus giving it the nickname "joe louis"...

the story... on a beautiful sunday afternoon, my friend tony and i loaded up the boat in koko marina and drove out to waimanalo... there we met our friend roy the "bluewater hunter/ person who makes my spearguns/ person who makes the frames for your gyotaku"... the water was like glass, motionless and as smooth as silk... as the sun began to slip behind the koolau mountain range, i came across this "joe"... underwater, the purple and red colors are vibrant and electrifying... this gyotaku highlights those colors as a school of "joes" goes swimming by...
