moano ukali >>> blue goatfish >>> (parupeneus cyclostomus)
>>> "MK"; "kali"
a favorite fish among divers and bottom fishermen... while the proper name
is "moano ukali" most people call them "moana kalis",
"MKs" or simply "kalis"... kalis are among the larger
goatfish, and are usually found in deeper waters... schools of kalis can sometimes
be found swimming along with a big omilu... as they swim by a split second
decision must be made, moano ukali or ulua??? because of its moist, clean
flavored meat, many would take a big kali over the ulua!!!
the story... on the really nice variable wind days, you may find Honolulu Fire Dept. rescue squad training out on the ocean off of kaneohe or hawaii kai... what better way to train for scuba diving than to dive for fish and tako?! the rescue firefighters will dive at depths of 100 feet or more to train and condition themselves for their job... my father works for the HFD and attests that there are some unreal divers in the fire department... on one particular "training day", Alan N. 3 pronged this fat moano ukali... Although the picture on the website is of me with a 3 lb. kali that i shot off of lanikai, you can imagine Alan's fish being about 6 inches longer, and able to feed at least 1 or 2 more hungry firefighters... Awesome catch Alan!!!
