keone's uhu

uhu >>> redlip parrotfish >>> (scarus rubroviolaceous)
the uhu is a prized fish by spearfishermen... they use their beaklike teeth to feed on algae growing on the coral reef... the digested coral is excreted as sand, and a large uhu can make as much as a ton of sand in a year... the coloration of the uhu is determined by their sex, males are blue and females are red... at night, they can be found encased in a mucus cocoon sleeping in cracks on the reef... during the day however, they are a challenging fish to capture as they are often very skitterish when approached...

the story... Keone is an avid freediver that has some big fish under his belt... on a recent trip to kauai, this big uhu was added to his list of outstanding catches (it was caught the hard way, during the day)... i was excited to print such a large specimen... if you look really closely you can see the algae growing on the corner of this fishes beak, a tell tale sign of a BIG UHU... nice catch Keone!!!
